Traveling With A Love For Life

The Convergence Medical Staffing Featured Nurse for November is a true “TRAVELER”.  Meet Marilyn S!  Originally from Cameroon, West Africa,  and currently on assignment in Charleston, S.C., this bubbly, energetic RN never meets a stranger.  “I am a free spirit … I get to see different places, meet new people, and have made numerous long term friends!” It’s no wonder Marilyn has made so many friends; people are naturally drawn to her love for life.  That may be the greatest reason she is one incredible nurse!

Her specialty? They are many! Marilyn works between Rehab, Medical Surgical, Psych, Long Term Acute Care, and Long Term Care. She enjoys the similarities that her specialties offer, but believes that the variety helps her to avoid burnout.  “Make as many friends as possible – it detracts from the stress of your work and the higher expectations as a Travel Nurse…It’s all scary but fun!”

Scary we ask? “Yes! the mix of working with strangers and the different ways to render patient care can be scary.  But, I always remind myself to try it for myself and see what outcome I get, and to not judge others based solely on initial impressions – we’re all different!”

Marilyn offers more advise for Travel Nurses: “Don’t let money be your number one factor for traveling.  Yes, the money is important, but taking care of people in different environments is a great privilege.”

Putting this philosophy to work every day, Marilyn describes one memorable nursing moment with a Alzheimer’s patient who required 1:1 care.  As she was charting, Marilyn sat her patient in a wheelchair beside her work area; but the patient had her own agenda and started calling to her. “Marilyn! I need some attention! Pay me some attention!”  Of course Marilyn started laughing but was also honored that the patient knew her name.  The charting was put aside and Marilyn tells us what happened next:  “I stood her up and we danced! (One of the patient’s favorite things to do.)  It was one of the memorable moments of my career and I smile each time I think of that patient.”

When asked about working with Convergence and her recruiter, Christie, Marilyn responds with her signature positive outlook. “Christie is amazing.  She answers all of my questions, regardless of what those may be, and is always quick to respond.” And her comments about Convergence? “They listen to you, work with you, and provide an environment where you want to be and are proud to be a part of their team.”

Marilyn – it is truly our pleasure to be part of your team!  Thank you for sharing your life’s adventures with us!
